The false one: “is your AI explainable?”, understood as “can you justify every neuron?”. Nobody can, and that is not what an auditor is asking. The real one: “can you reconstruct, for any answer produced, the complete chain that led to it?”. Which file went in, which version of the system, which sources were consulted, which score, which human approved, and when. Exactly the function of the flight recorder: making the event reconstructable, not making the physics of the engine transparent.

Complete, timestamped logs of every processing run; systematic sourcing linking each statement to a document, a page, a version; versioning of models and configurations; replayability, or failing that a documented explanation of differences; a known execution environment, which rules out architectures where inference is sent off to a remote interface whose version and pipeline are not inspectable. And finally, be wary of explainability promises reduced to a generated sentence that “explains” the answer: that is a plausible explanation, not a record.
