When is a general-purpose LLM more than enough?

Should consumer generative AI be banned from the workplace? No — and this should be said honestly: for a draft, a rewrite, an internal summary, meeting preparation or a first pass over a subject, a general-purpose LLM is excellent, immediate and inexpensive. The boundary is not the size of the document but its reach: as soon as a text binds the company towards a client, an auditor or a regulator, you move into a different category of tool.

Cases where the LLM is the right choice, without reservation

Rewriting a paragraph in a more direct tone; summarising minutes; producing a first outline of a technical memorandum that experts will rewrite; translating an informal exchange; rehearsing responses to objections; exploring a subject before going to the sources. In all these cases, any error is inconsequential: the text stays internal and will be reworked.

The three switching criteria

Commitment: will the document be signed, submitted, enforceable? Evidence: must every statement be sourced and verifiable? The collective: must several people approve, with a record of who approved what? A single “yes” is enough to move outside the scope of a general-purpose LLM. A three-page request for information with no commitment attached can go through it; a 150-page file that will end up as a contractual annex cannot. This clarity is also good governance practice: rather than banning, define the boundary and provide proper tooling on the other side of it.
